Nestled among the trees in the grounds of George Bernard Shaw’s Hertfordshire home is a small cottage where Shaw found the tranquility he needed to write. It was built on a circular steel track so that it could rotate to follow the sun throughout the day. In this small space, surrounded by this pale, peaceful greenery, Shaw created plots and characters that would earn him a Nobel Prize in 1925 and an Oscar in 1938. Shaw affectionately nicknamed the cottage “London” so that unwanted visitors would know that he was away ‘visiting the capital’.
