‘Tulip’ (Erddig) c.1898 Considered one of the finest country houses in Britain, Erddig, on the outskirts of Wrexham in North Wales, houses a bountiful collection of wallpapers. Some still adorn the walls of the state rooms, but many more were found as samples in tea chests in the attic bedrooms. At the turn of the 20th century, they were collected by Philip and Louisa Yorke, who had recently married and set about redecorating Erddig, their new family home. This wavy foliage pattern is unusual in its execution; the gradual colour that gives life and depth to the leaves was, as late as 1898, a contemporary evolution of the traditional flat damask design.
